Waipahu High School Integrated Academic Facility

One of the largest high schools in the State of Hawaii, Waipahu is a College and Career Ready Smaller Learning Communities High School where students enroll in one of six pathways: Arts and Communication, Business Services, Health Services, Industrial Engineering Technology, Natural Resources, Public and Human Services. With sustainability as the backbone of our master planning effort, we worked with the school to craft a plan that will help them make incremental steps to make their campus more efficient, sustainable and comfortable in this hot, dry part of the island. Key strategies include maximizing opportunities for outdoor learning, implementing better stormwater strategies, reducing potable water, making the landscapes more active, improving energy efficiency and maximizing passive strategies. In addition to our master planning work we are designing an Integrated Academy Facility—a living building, where students will engage in real-time project-based learning through biofiltration tanks, hydroponics, and various sustainable feedback loop features on display. We also engaged in a heat abatement study for Waipahu High School.
