St. Francis High School Athletic Center

This new 16,000 square foot athletic facility was the second of a four-phased effort to fulfill the campus master plan. It includes a wood floor gymnasium, locker rooms, a weight room, classrooms, offices, and student and public restrooms. Neighbors in the adjacent residential community had concerns about increased noise and traffic, and these considerations greatly informed the massing and siting of the building. Translucent glazing at the play court’s perimeter pulls in diffused lighting, minimizing the dependency on artificial lighting and reducing energy bills. The facility doubles as an all-school gathering space for rallies, meetings, and liturgy.

The athletic facility was designed using LEED and Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) guidelines, informing material selection for optimized energy efficiency, and good acoustics and indoor air quality.
