Sandy Development, Mountain America Credit Union
This new workplace for Mountain America Credit Union is a critical addition to The Cairns, an 1100-acre mixed-use development within Sandy Utah’s burgeoning city center, “where mountain meets urban.” The development, which includes a mix of entertainment, housing, commercial, and civic offerings, is inspired by the cairn, a uniquely constructed pile stones that acts as a landmark, wayfinding cue, and connection between people and nature.
Taking cues from both the cairn and the striking landscape, Mountain America’s new headquarters, located just off of Interstate 15, is situated to serve as a high visibility landmark that captures sweeping views of Cottonwood Canyon and the Wasatch Mountains. The light, glassy facade—comprised of carefully selected, highly reflective, insulated glass—mirrors the expansive sky and mountains, while maximizing comfort and energy efficiency. Aluminum fins, dense at the base and spaced widely at the top of the building, create interest along the façade, evoking the layers of strata. Reflecting the landscape, light, and movement of the sky, the building looks different from season to season, day to day, and throughout the course of a single day.
This new modern workplace is adjacent to the popular Hale Centre Theater, Sandy City Hall, a recently completed multi-family residential complex, and structured parking that pulls cars off the street to help create a pedestrian-friendly environment. With its visibility from the interstate, the tower offers both a landmark for the overall development and an outward-facing projection of Mountain America’s commitment to offering its community “a clear way forward.”
