North Elementary School Multi-Purpose Building
Designed for flexibility, the new 6,500 square foot Multi-purpose Building at North Elementary accommodates athletic activities, theatrical performances, student dining, and parent / teacher meeting space. The new building sits at the top of the elementary school campus overlooking the southern drop-off area and lower athletic playing fields. The main court is 40′ x 68’ with two retractable basketball backboards, sports flooring, and volleyball stanchions. This flexible space accommodates 300 seats for theatrical performances and 192 seats for lunch.
High clerestory windows on three sides of the main court space provide ample daylighting and views to the surrounding wooded hillsides. Landscaped patio spaces for students and faculty allow for small gatherings outdoors adjacent to the existing campus buildings.
Designed as a sensitive addition to the North Elementary campus, the new building has a simple material palette of stained wood siding, cement plaster, and painted concrete columns chosen to help blend with existing buildings and respond to its heavily wooded site. The building’s unpainted wood complements its neighbors and will acquire a patina over time.
