Jakob Brainerd

Designer

Jakob approaches architecture as an extension of the landscape, drawn to buildings that seem to emerge from their natural surroundings and are in dialogue with their urban context. The native Californian joined the Studio in 2019 following a two-year tenure at an architecture firm in Australia. There, he worked on a numerous project types including, commercial, education, and public spaces. He also moonlighted as a coffee shop designer. He began his career primarily working on restaurant and workplace design, branding and art curation.

At WRNS, Jakob is interested in working on a range of projects including landscape, architecture and interior design. He has a keen interest in sustainability and creating a sense of place. Passionate about responsible design, in all his projects, he makes it a priority to incorporate elements that have the lightest touch on the earth as possible, taking into consideration not only its inhabitants, but also the neighboring flora and fauna.

Jakob received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Architecture and Design from The Academy of Art University. During school, he explored furniture design, working at Knoll on special projects. He likes small cabin designs, Japanese teahouses, geometric forms, and wood-laden workspaces. When he’s not dreaming of the next architectural escape, you’ll find surfing, playing drums in his band, writing music, and riding his bike everywhere.
